Gold Notes for the September 6th
|
Tomorrow is a holiday!! What have you got planned? I'm going out to dinner with friends and then to a movie; but earlier in the day I think I'm ready to start hanging my new cabinets in my renovated kitchen. I'm so tired of not having a stove and having to go out to the patio to find something in my fridge! A microwave sitting on a table in the living room doesn't quite get it. Everything but the dishwasher is here and I can assemble pretty much everything without the washer. Oh, two new windows also are still on order, but they won't interfere. Wish me luck. First off, I have an odd gift for anyone who might want some. Some what, you say? Buffalo baby back ribs. Jim Rathbun has purchased some buffalo meat and would like to share some of the ribs. Never tried buffalo? It actually is very good. I make sure to stop at a restaurant along I90 when traveling back to my home country in eastern South Dakota, that serves buffalo. So, let me know in the next couple of days if you'd like some. I'm hoping to be able to run down to Hanford on Wednesday to have lunch with Jim, check to see if the folks that bought my rental property there have destroyed it and bring back some items for Jim. I'd be glad to bring the meat back for you. I've already got a couple of takers! Are you next? Have you ordered your new polo shirt yet? If not, why not??? See Clint Cole for details and to get yours coming. These are to be the new "class B" outfits for wearing at contest venues and some local performances. Also, I understand there are a few guys who have not been fitted for the new suits, our formal contest and performance garb. You must get this done in the next couple of days. Oh, I'm sure the suit outlet is closed tomorrow, but why not be there first thing Tuesday morning? Hopefully you've all paid for yours - see Clint to make sure. The address of the company that will be fitting the suits is: Fresno Suit Outlet, 5110 N. Blackstone. Phone 225-7848. (Hours are 10 - 8, Monday through Friday and 10 - 5 Saturday and Sunday. Planning on competing with the chorus in Bakersfield on October 9th? Better yet, planning on being there on Friday night to root for the local heroes? Silver & Gold will be singing no. 12 (we were 13 but somebody above us scratched, so we have no reason to be superstitious now!) Let's hear you in the audience. Where was I??? Oh yeah, if you're planning on singing on that stage on Saturday, you must have purchased an all events ticket. I'll attach the registration form one more time so that you can print it, fill it out and mail it to the address listed on the form. No room yet? There is still (for a couple more days) room at the Best Western Crystal Palace Inn & Suites. The headquarters has been full for some time. If you go to this site: https://www.mmxreservations. com/BAKERSFIELD/reservations/Step1.asp?EventID=5 The Batastic Cabaret is right after the contest. We need to fill the house this year - we came close last year, but had quite a few seats empty. You may have heard Terry Starr and I talking about wanting to sell enough tickets that we'd have to move out the rolling wall at the back of the room and expand to the windows. That would mean something in the order of 500 tickets. If you can pull that off, we'll figure out how to put more speakers in the place so all can hear! We'll have a flyer for you very soon; in the meantime be talking it up and also figuring out your costume. Remind your friends that we'll have prizes for the best costume, cash for the winners of the 50/50 raffle, and lots of things to bid on in the silent auction. Which reminds me, what do you have to contribute for the auction? David Reitzel has forms for you to fill out for your donation - whether it be a service or some item of value. See Dave if you have questions! This coming Saturday, September 11th. we are to be coached by Alan Gordon, one of the best in the business! We've brought him in before and those that still have some memory working will remember Alan as positive and full of options and advice for bringing the best we can to the stage on October 9th. We'll be at the Mennonite Community Church (same place we practice) from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Be sure to bring your water bottle and comfy shoes. Saturday September 25th. is set for a family picnic at the home of David and Rosa Reitzel. The meal is to be a potluck - we'll get more details on what's expected from David soon. Oh wait - David already provided it: 4:00 p.m. to ??? Potluck. Reitzels will provide tableware, soft drinks, and an entree (Rosa’s wonderful lasagna). BYOB if you prefer an adult beverage. And a chair if you can (we have only 12). Fresno State v. Mississippi (away game) will be televised. Barbershop singing will not be discouraged. And there you have it! Plan now to be there!! You might think about what you plan to bring (food) and run it by David to make sure it fits! And this week... Wednesday evening, the 8th. Board meeting at the home of Bill Holden. 7:00 PM. Always lots to talk about, so if you are an elected member of the board of directors of GNC A Cappella, you need to be there. Address is: 2727 Norwich , Clovis , CA 93611 And lastly, before I get into the rehearsal schedule, don't forget to invite anyone you run across (heck go out and find 'em) to come sing with us on our Christmas Show. We are now rehearsing during the first hour of our regular rehearsals on Thursdays. Love to have a ton of guests join us. Jim Irvine has written and is tweaking a script for the show and Adam and Wes are making sure we have a good mix of music. We're working on securing dates for several performances and have committed to one on November 27th at Northwest Church, 7:00 PM. There could possibly be 4 more... watch for details! Schedule for rehearsal, Thursday September 9th. 6:45 - 7:00 Arrive early to help set up the room. See Keith Sharwood for any questions dealing with uniforms and Wes Jackson for music or learning CDs. 7:00 - 7:30 Warm ups with Adam "hat" Kitt. 7:30 - 7:35 Introduction of guests by Clint "Cake Man" Cole. Bryan Lewis will direct us in "You're As Welcome As The Flowers Is May". 7:35 - 7:50 Work on Christmas music, beginning with "Lo, How a Rose E're Blooming" - page 25. 7:50 - 8:05 "O Holy Night" also slated for our Christmas Show. 8:05 - 8:25 Work on contest and Cabaret song, "Basin St. Blues". 8:25 - 840 "Smile Medley" is next on the agenda. 8:40 - 8:50 Break - don't wander away - there's lots more good stuff to come. 8:50 - 9:15 On to our other contest song, "Where the Southern Roses Grow" 9:15 - 9:30 Show song - "Who Will Buy" - I think we're finally getting this one down! Doug Yarrow will be the watcher for this one. 9:30 - 9:50 Time to perform the contest package - "Where the Southern Roses Grow" and "Basin St. Blues". These two songs have made great strides with the new choreography and commitment! This is the last time we'll sing them before performing the package for Alan Gordon on Saturday. Need to look at your music? Do it now... Friday will be too late. 9:50 - 9:55 Announcements. See Terry Starr if you have anything to bring to the good of the chapter. 9:55 - 10:00 "Keep the Whole World Singing" with Jim Weyenberg doing the arm waving. That's it for this week - see you all a bit early on Saturday morning!!!
